About Webster TechniqueTraining About Webster TechniqueTraining What is Webster Technique? Chiropractic care in pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby during pregnancy and birth. More women and birth providers are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care in pregnancy and recognize this area of experience through Webster certification. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractor sacral analysis and a diversified adjustment. The aim of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/joint dysfunction. In doing so, it facilitates neurobiomechanical function in the pelvis. Sacral subluxation can contribute to difficult work for the mother (i.e. distocia), caused by inadequate uterina function, pelvic contraction and mispresentation of the baby. Correction of the sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all these causes of distociation. You can help your patients achieve the best possible result of birth. There is no greater reward than knowing that your service has made a difference in the lives of your patients and your new family member. History of Webster Technique Dr. Larry Webster, founder of ICPA, Logan practitioner and instructor of Life College, developed the Webster Technique in response to his daughter, the birth of Lucinda to his daughter, Shannon. Dr. Webster was present at his long and arduous birth and although he adjusted it during birth, he felt that chiropractic could have a greater impact on work with a more specific focus of the pelvis. After this personal experience with the birth of your daughter, Dr. Webster strived to develop an adjustment "for women to work to help with the ease of birth." He felt that there should be a more specific way to address sub-luxations during pregnancy that would contribute to the safer and easier births for the mother. Soon after, Dr. Webster cared for a family whose mother was pregnant and also had leeches. He applied his newly discovered approach in the hope of easier delivery than his daughter. He saw her once a week for several weeks and noticed that her baby became a vertex in time for delivery. Dr. Webster started teaching other chiropractors this adjustment. These doctors reported that when your patient's babies were not in an optimal position, these babies were also converting the vertex. Thus the title: "Webster Breech Turning Technique" later to be called "Webster In-Utero Constraint Technique" by Drs. Anrig and Forrester. When her daughter, Pamela, was pregnant, she insisted that she received regular chiropractic care during pregnancy and sent her a video of her technique to show her chiropractor. He also showed it to his OB, who was very interested in pelvic biomechanics and chiropractic perspective. He also encouraged her to see her chiropractor regularly for this technique knowing that this was out of its obstetric reach. ICPA and Webster Certification In 2000, ICPA officially implemented the . Connie Webster, widow of Dr. Webster and executive director of ICPA, and Dr. Jeanne Ohm developed the course and certification to teach chiropractors the technique and importance of their application during pregnancy. Dr. Ohm created the curriculum on the physiological concept used by the Webster Technique during pregnancy can eliminate the causes of distociation. Within a year or so, ICPA members were encouraged to remove terms that involved a change in spelling. In 2012, ICPA Research Director, Dr. Joel Alcantara and Dr. Jeanne Ohm published the paper, . He clarified the intention, definition and specific analysis with sacral correction of the Webster technique as originally taught by Dr. Webster. He reiterated the importance of eliminating the terms "reflection of race" and "constraint in the uterus." It's true that Dr's original intention. Webster, the Webster Technique has always been taught in the ICPA Certification Program as a specific sacral analysis and diversified adjustment to be used during pregnancy to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation, but also for all weight-bearers, regardless of age or gender. Methods: The surveys were sent to 1047 U.S. and Canadian ICPA members. Results: Of 1047 ICPA members, about eighty-seven surveys were returned, accounting for a rate of 17.86%. Seventy-five responses did not meet the criteria for the inclusion of the study and were excluded; 112 surveys (11%) provided the data. Of these 112 surveys, 102 (92%) resulted in the resolution of the Breech presentation, while 10 (9%) remained unresolved. Conclusion: The doctors surveyed reported a high success rate (82%) in the recovery of musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine restriction using the Webster Technique. Although the sample size was small, the results suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique in the month 8 of pregnancy, when the presentation of the sample is unlikely to spontaneously convert to the cephalic presentation and when the external cephalic version is not an effective technique. When successful, the Webster Technique avoids the costs and/or risks of the external cephalic version, caesarea or vaginal eruption test. In view of these findings, the Webster Technique deserves serious consideration in the health management of pregnant women who exhibit a negative fetal presentation.
